Tooncast is a Latin American digital cable and satellite channel owned by Warner Bros. Entertainment.

Launched on 1 December 2008, it airs 24 hours of classic animation from Hanna-Barbera and Cartoon Network, similar to Boomerang. It features no interruptions for advertising or programming promotions; when one show ends, the next one starts immediately.

All of Tooncast's programming is available in three language options: English, Brazilian Portuguese, and Latin American Spanish.

On 1 June 2021, the channel's programming undergoes a drastic change, being greatly reduced compared to previous months. However, this reduction in programs is also accompanied by some new releases. It is speculated that these changes came as an effect of the launch in Latin America of the streaming service HBO Max.

On 1 December 2022, the channel undergoes another drastic change, removing all Hanna-Barbera, Warner Bros., and DC shows, leaving only original Cartoon Network shows, bringing back some shows that were removed, but leaving the channel's programming even smaller.

On 1 June 2023, Tooncast's programming changed yet again, this time bringing back retired shows, including Warner Bros. and Hanna-Barbera classics. On 1 October, Duck Dodgers and Loonatics Unleashed returned to the schedule.

On 29 November 2023, it was reported that the channel would be discontinued in 2024.[1]

On 1 January 2024, Baby Looney Tunes returned to the schedule, and Loonatics Unleashed was removed. During the same month, the channel began broadcasting in HD.[2]

Former[]

Censorship[]

Since the channel is from Warner Bros. Entertainment, the cartoons shown sometimes have the same edits as the American feeds of some channels, particularly Cartoon Network, Boomerang, and The WB. For example, "Buccaneer Bunny" is also edited to remove the scene where Pirate Sam nearly shoots himself in the head after Bugs tells him, "Dead men tell no tales", just like it was on the former WB network. However, Tooncast does air some Warner Bros. shorts uncut and even airs some shorts that American TV has long put out of circulation due to racially insensitive content (as seen with "Saddle Silly", "China Jones", and both the Sylvester and Speedy Gonzales shorts and the Daffy Duck and Speedy Gonzales shorts), barring the Censored Eleven and most World War II shorts.

Notes[]

  • Tooncast is also occasionally known to reuse some old Cartoon Network Powerhouse-era bumpers and commercials from the late-1990s and early-2000s, with the name Tooncast replacing the Cartoon Network name. Examples include Tooncast Shorties. The channel once played Powerhouse from Cartoon Network.
  • The transfers of classic Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts aired on Tooncast (which apply to both pre-1948 and post-1948 shorts) are the same as for the Latin American Cartoon Network/Boomerang feeds. Like the Latin American Cartoon Network/Boomerang feeds, even as recently as 2008 (the year of the network's launch), some a.a.p. prints of pre-1948 shorts that the other Cartoon Network/Boomerang feeds worldwide had retired since the late-1990s still continue to be shown on Tooncast, and sometimes the a.a.p. and Turner prints of the same pre-1948 short are shown alternately in each airing due to the old dub/new dub differences for Brazilian Portuguese and Latin American Spanish dubs (though the English track still remains [mostly] the same on both transfers).
