Super Nintendo Entertainment System (also known as the Super NES, SNES or Super Nintendo) is a video game console developed by Nintendo that was released in 1990 in Japan, 1991 in North America, 1992 in Europe and Australasia (Oceania), and South America in 1993. It was advertised as a competitor to the Sega Genesis. Each system came with two controllers, has two controller ports, and plays games via cartridge in 2-dimension. The SNES succeeded the Nintendo Entertainment System and does not have backwards compatibility with said console. The SNES was succeeded by the Nintendo 64.

In 2017, a smaller version of the console called the SNES Classic was released. It comes with about twenty pre-downloaded games. While it does not come with native cartridge gameplay support, a third-party adapter for the console is supported to play cartridge games on the SNES classic. The console's new controllers now have connectors that can plug into a Wii Remote, because SNES titles were released on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console. The SNES classic production ended December 2018.
