Love and Curses is a 1938 Merrie Melodies short directed by Ben Hardaway and Cal Dalton.

Plot[]

An old couple, Harold and Emily, recalls their past in the 1890s by viewing their old family album. Among the things of the time such as fruit hats and classic film arcades, they also mention an encounter with "Snake" Roger St. Clair at a picnic.

As Harold is swinging Emily on a swing, Roger tries to bribe Emily to move to the city with valuables such as dresses and jewelry to no avail. Eventually, Roger takes Emily hostage. Harold tries to stop Roger from taking Emily, but is booted unconscious off the tree and the two makes their escape.

Six months after the kidnapping, Harold is still trying to find Emily. Emily is forced to perform at the Palace Bar for Roger's own gain. Harold manages to hear Emily's voice, and they reunite, but Roger attempts to still take back Emily for himself. Roger drops a stage prop onto Harold and runs to a railroad to tie Emily up. However, Harold begins to show his strength, and carries the train tracks to divert the train away from Emily. Roger escapes again to a sawmill, and the fisticuffs fight ends with Roger being punched into the river.

Back to the present time, Harold says it has been years since they last saw Roger and wonders if he'll come back. However, Roger suddenly appears and takes back Emily. Harold comes after Roger, but not before singing part of "Poor Old Joe" and then leaving.
