Back in the days when I played this game, it was very easy to die even though you get 9 lives to start off with no matter the difficultly. As time goes by you find out why you've been bad at the game you're playing and then become good at it.
While it is kinda easy to die in this game do keep in mind that you gain an extra life for every 100,000 points that you get and since nailing Tweety nets you 20,000 points... you'll gain quite a number of lives.
By normal means... Tweety follows "checkpoints" within the level and if you nail Tweety as he heads over to a "checkpoint" he'll skip it and go to the next one. Doing this right can force him to go to the end of the level without any trouble so you can complete it. A good example is in the Hyde And Shriek levels since Tweety can transform into a monster and chase you down but one he goes back to normal after a set time or by throwing potions quickly nail him to force him to skip checkpoints here and there.
