Fistic Mystic is a 1969 Looney Tunes short directed by Robert McKimson.

Plot[]

Merlin the Magic Mouse and his sidekick Second Banana travel to the Old West for their next show. While riding by handcar, Merlin slams into a bumper and nearly gets run over by a speeding train, although Merlin hides in his hat. Eventually, they walk to the town of Rattlesnake Gulch and walk to a saloon.

A tough guy exits the saloon wanting to fight someone after chasing everyone else. Merlin comes and the tough guy maniacally laughs, thinking that he can easily beat a pair of mice. Second Banana knocks out the tough guy, much to Merlin's surprise. After the cowboy wakes, Merlin challenges him to a boxing match against Second Banana. He schedules the fight for the next day, and they each bet a hundred dollars on winner-take-all. That night, Merlin enchants a pair of boxing gloves that throw knockout punches at the sound of a bell so Second Banana can't lose.

The next day, Merlin uses the magic of the boxing gloves to easily defeat the rival. However, Merlin fails to make the boxing gloves return to his hat, but not that it matters as Second Banana is safe. Merlin declares Second Banana as the new champion, while the tough guy is forced out of town via the boxing gloves.

Notes[]

  • Second Banana is sporting a redesign in this short that he would have for the rest of his appearances. His ears are shaped different, and rather than a green bow tie, he wears a yellow turtleneck sweater. Additionally, Merlin no longer wears spats on his feet or patches on his shirt.
  • This cartoon opens with a unique one-time variation of Bill Lava's arrangement of the Looney Tunes theme ("The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down.")
  • In unrestored prints of this cartoon, Merlin can be seen blinking on the starring card in the title card sequence. This detail was omitted on the HBO Max restored print.
  • It shares its title with a Popeye the Sailor cartoon from 1946.
