Dr. Jerkyl's Hide is a 1954 Looney Tunes short directed by Friz Freleng.

Title[]

The title is a play on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from the Robert Louis Stevenson story Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Plot[]

Sylvester is chased by Alf and Chester into the lab of Dr. Jerkyl. The cat is subjected to Dr. Jerkyl's potion that transforms him into a giant wildcat monster that claws Alfie into pieces, before reverting into Sylvester just as Chester comes and notices Alf is in fear.

Censorship[]

The following cuts were made to this cartoon:

  • When the short aired in ABC's The Bugs Bunny/Looney Tunes Comedy Hour and The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show, the short scene of Sylvester climbing and locking himself inside a trunk in Dr. Jerkyl's bedroom was cut.
  • On CBS, the trunk part was left in, but the scene of Chester slapping Alfie in the face, spitting at his feet, and snarling, "You're yellow!" after being pummeled by a fly that drank Dr. Jerkyl's potion was cut.

Notes[]

  • As in their previous cartoon, "Tree for Two", Chester, oblivious to what Spike had really gone through, is disillusioned by his cowardice ("You're yellow!"), resulting in the dogs switching roles in the end.
  • When the chase starts, a sign on a building reads "Wyner Loan Co.", a reference to background artist Irv Wyner.
  • The Boomerang streaming service release of this short replaces the original Looney Tunes opening music theme from 1946 to 1955 with the one heard from 1955 to 1964. This error is also present in the HBO Max release of this short, as well as on all MeTV airings.
