Boulevardier from the Bronx is a 1936 Merrie Melodies short directed by I. Freleng.

Plot[]

Dizzy Dan will be playing for the Chicago Giants baseball team against the Hicksville team. As a group of fans cheer for Dizzy Dan as he visits Hicksville, Emily the Chicken falls for him, although her boyfriend, Hicksville Claude, isn't amazed. After the band plays, the baseball game starts.

For the first inning, Dizzy Dan pitches against a pig and strikes him out, although the turtle catcher gets bruised in the hand by Dan's pitches until he has to use a pipe to reflect the ball back to the pitcher. After two innings, the Giants lead the game 2-0. It is now Claude's turn to pitch against a dachshund, and the dachshund hits the ball. As Claude tries to catch it, multiple baseballs rain down as the dachshund gets a home run. Dan is now at the plate. However, being the showboat he is, Dan intentionally fouls off the first two pitches before hitting the ball then preening briefly, before quickly scoring a home run, much to the delight of Emily.

In the bottom last inning, the score is 3-0. After Dan intentionally walks all bases loaded to pitch to Claude. After getting two strikes, Claude manages to finally get a hit from Dan's pitching. Quickly running for a home run, the Hicksville team wins the game 3-4. As Claude is congratulated for his win, he sees Dan walking to him, and Claude laughs and crows in Dan's face.

Notes[]

  • This is the first Merrie Melodies cartoon to use "Merrily We Roll Along" as the opening theme.
  • This is the only Merrie Melodies cartoon to have a unique target ring opening sequence, although the ending card is the one used in the early 1936 season.
  • This is also the first Merrie Melodies cartoon to use the 1936-37 Blue Color Rings.
  • The restoration has the incorrect early-1936 ending titles, as the originals had the exclamation mark of "That's all Folks!" inside the quotation marks, and the byline "MERRIE MELODIES" has both words appearing at the same time, whereas the original prints had "MERRIE" appear before "MELODIES".
